2014-01-18 Old West Ride

Rode from home to Bicycles Plus in FlowerMound. Met up with Becky, Mark, and Sharon for a ride over the bridge to Grapevine. Just before we met up with several others at the Old West Cafe, Becky and I collided (90% my fault). Broke one of her spokes, and some great cuts on my ankle. We met the others, then did the Horseshoe trail out and back. Lunch at Old West was tasty. We waited for Mark to finish gabbing and we rode back to Bikes Plus. James helped us with a new spoke nipple and trued the wheel for us (saved me some time, but I was willing to do it). Very helpful, as usual. Also, tall people rule. Ride home was uneventful, but I was depleted. Some great lung phlegm from the ride.

2014-01-04 Cadence Korner

Bike clinic at Cadence with 25% discount today only. Then we rode down to Korner Kafe on FM1171. Oscar was nice and the place was comfortable. Food prices were reasonable and everything was very tasty.

2013-11-29 HV Ponder Steakhouse RT

Planned to meet the TX Flyers for 9:30am Downing to Ponder Steakhouse, but I was too late leaving home to make it in time. I went direct and stopped at a couple waypoints and never found the group. I’m guessing either A) it was too cold for their start, B) too few showed up for the start, or C) they decided to go somewhere else. Whichever way, I had a good solo ride and tasty Chicken Fried Steak, Baked Potato, and Fried Green Tomatoes. I also explored the Ponder school complex, as it’s right next to the Ranchman Cafe. Return trip was the exact same route. I thought the hills were one-way, but they were mid-route humps. Also, I forgot about the headwind on the return! AAAHHHGG. I know, boring, but I don’t know the area really well, and it made it easier to not get lost. Heart wasn’t pounding, so I guess I was listening too much to the muscle-blerch and not enough to my pulse, though I feel pretty worn out. I did get 6 personal records through Argyle and Copper Canyon. More than 50% of my steak was leftover, and being cold out, it kept nicely during the ride home. It made a tasty post-ride meal.

Slower than I wanted, but faster than I thought. I should have pushed harder. Note that the first mile had no HR data because the electrodes were too dry.

Elevation Gain: 2,070 ft
Elevation Loss: 1,555 ft
Min Elevation: 24 ft
Max Elevation: 747 ft
Start of ride didn’t calibrate elevation properly. Starting elevation should have been in the 530ft range. It was only after power off and restart that it was correct. I didn’t fly up out of a hole in the ground. Not sure if that means 500 feet of this are false, or if it just started me at the new elevation.

Wow, I spent 3 minutes over 500 watts power output. Would be nice to have a real power meter so I could see actual power (estimated power doesn’t factor in wind).

Avg Bike Cadence: 77 rpm
Max Bike Cadence: 101 rpm
As usual, the cadence sensor spikes when I leave the left pedal up coasting. It says 256RPM, which is UNPOSSIBLE. Even Strava couldn’t filter this one out.

Avg Temperature: 60.4 °F
Min Temperature: 50.0 °F

Temps are reported 18 degrees F higher than reality. I would say it’s the sun, but that shouldn’t matter with 20-30mph wind. The wind should cool (or warm) it to within a degree or so of ambient (unless I were travelling fast enough for atmospheric friction based heating, which I was not).

2013-11-17 Campion Hummus

Was late to the Valley Ranch library. Wheels down 18 mins after the start, and caught up with Mark by 32 mins after. Once at the restaurant, Sharon and I made a loop through Las Colinas not too far from her CCC rides. Once back, a brief snack and the social greets, then the group headed back. Sharon, another lady, and I took to some of the hardpack along the Trinity for part of the Campion return, and checked out the far end of the trail.

Need to tighten up my crank arms and adjust my wheel / cadence sensor (maybe new battery?)

UPS delivered my replacement CX frame

UPDATE 1: If you replace the frame on a bike, is that a replacement, or a new bike?

When I re-tapped the threads on my Genesis’ bottom bracket, they tore out after 1.5 miles of riding. After a lot of research and patience, a new frame from Nashbar was my best option. Their “CX” frame had the cantilever posts I wanted, so this box from UPS is it.

Upon inspection, the maker is Kinesis, the same as my road bike (Windsor brand, Fens model). The geometry is almost identical. The difference is disc mounts, canti mounts, and black paint. The geometry is almost the same as my Genesis too – same top tube, shorter head and seat tubes by an inch, same chainstays.

It took 5.5 hours to ream, face, and install headset, transfer all of the parts including forks, then adjust everything. The head tube was already reamed, so very little was removed, other than paint on the top side. I installed the cups with wood blocks and a brass hammer. My thick head didn’t really realize I should have just used the reamer handles to screw against wood blocks for a compression fit. Whatever. It all fits and is flush.

I forgot my right shifter needs to be reassembled, so I still can’t get into 1st gear, but that’s okay. I swapped back to the 40 degree stem, but it’s still not quite right. Maybe the bottom race isn’t smacked down enough. I’ll have to re-mount this to take up some slack in the upper bearings.

I forgot that the frame doesn’t have a kickstand mount, so now I have 2 bikes that fall over. I have some wood under the porch I can probably make a rack out of, but there’s no real room to hang these and still fit the car in the garage.

OH, I just found that the old bike frame makes a really nice bike stand.

UPDATE 2: Here’s the rebuild. It’s a Nashbar CX 60cm frame (21″ top tube, 24″ seat tube, 700x35c spacing, canti and disc mounts (I have Deore 550 canti brakes). Drivetrain is XT 752 rear der, FSA Vero compact double (about tiagra level, with square taper). Levers are all metal, but shifters are SRAM MRX grips (whole cassette at once!).

Fork is Fuji FC770 (carbon forks with aluminum steerer) with an FSA Big Pig headset. Bars are Orbea Cat III carbon with an Avenir 40 degree 120mm stem (lighter and more rise than the matching Orbea stem). Seat is a Cloud 9 from sunight. it’s heavy, dorky, and great for really long rides.

I need to re-weigh it, but I think it’s about 30 pounds with the 5-pound tool bag (spare tube, lots of tools, spare chain, etc). I’m 265LBS, so I don’t really care about the weight. In all of my testing, performance really is mostly the parts, geometry, posture, and my own stamina.

UPDATE 3: New build is 30.4 pounds with tools, spares, etc but not bottles.
Totally frankenbike, but my only complaint right now is that I need to rebuild or replace the right shifter, and figure out a stand for it (no kickstand). It’s a great CX-Hybrid (CX for mountain parts, wider tires, and cantilever brakes on a road frame, and hybrid for flat bars on a road frame).

Just putt-putting around with Mark. We visited Cadence Cyclery. Broke my headlight, and even so, it was vastly inferior. Some lag in GPS waking up both times.
