Garmin cycling categories

Under profile Cycling it asks for cycling classification number. What is that?

These are race categories.
* Recreational means someone who doesn’t race.
* Category 5 means new racer.
* Category 4 means you’ve completed 10 mass-start races.
* Category 3 means you earned 20-30 points as a cat-4 racer.
* Category 2 means you earned 30-40 points as a Cat-3 racer.
* Category 1 means you earned 35-50 poings as a Cat-2 racer.

As for “Open Category”, I’m not really sure. It looks like it’s a fuzzy term for elite racers, such as cat 2,1,pro together. It may include Cat 3 racers that were fit enough to compete with them, but didn’t have the points to upgrade yet.

Cat-1 upgrades require the involvement of the regional race coordinator, but lower levels can be done locally.

You can be downgraded after time, but never back to Cat-5.

There are several ways to earn points:
* Attending a USA Cycling education clinics
* Completing a race in the front pack
* Finishing in the top 10 of a race.

2014-03-07 Coppell and Lewisville Ride

Was supposed to ride with Mike out in Justin, but I messed up my schedule (sleep deprivation) and he had a cut-off of 2pm (start at noon or earlier). I barely made it to a 3pm roll near my house. I feel bad about it, but I’m such a zombie that is was probably for the best.

I only had 4 hours sleep and 700 calories today including the ride fuel for this ride. I’m still not hungry, which probably has to do with having between 250 and 360mg of caffeine today.

This ride started into a monster headwind. The new wheels on my bike helped some because they flex less. Also, I re-centered my brakes, which made a huge difference. I didn’t realize how much they were dragging.

I have no idea how the watts is doing. It may be time to buy a power meter and expensive cranks just because.

Wrapped black-bike handlebars

Wrapped my black bike’s handlebars. Still pending bottom bracket adjustment. They’re the old aluminum ones that came with my white bike. They actually have a little more flex in the drops than my carbon ones. Stem is 40 degree (vs 8 on the other, so it’s more upright. The Microshift levers are okay, but the levers themselves aren’t shaped right. Makes it hard to brake with 1-finger from the hoods like I can do with my 105 brifters.

There is no way my HR was 239. This was probably when I adjusted the strap. I did alert 4 times for going over 189. I peak at 191.

2014-01-20 Sharon’s Ranchman

Group ride out to the Ponder steakhouse. Good company. Sharon, Jim Fitzgerald, Kathy and Jim Burmeister, Mark Solow, Josh Davis (me), Theresa, and one other lady who’s name I’ve not memorized.

Everyone got the Coconut pie except for me. This is what the coconut pie looks like at Ranchman’s:

Kathy gave me a bite and it was really tasty. I should have ordered my own slice and suffered the overfull belly. It had shredded coconut in the pudding-like filling. Though, I learned that if it’s a pie without a top crust, it’s a tart. If it’s a tart with a merengue top, what is that? I dunno. The lunch special was Chicken Fried Steak, with the lunch portion only 4oz, which was exactly the perfect size. Normal half-size is 6oz, which was a little much last time.

On the way back, the train stopped and blocked us, but it was only half a mile to the next crossing.

Theresa and the other lady have full group pictures at the train tracks, but we didn’t otherwise think to get a group picture. OOps!

Kathy was riding a borrowed CrossCheck. Great bike, but either the indexing was off a little, the chain was acting up (never lubed), or the return spring on the 105 was failing (also not lubed).

But, she was sold on road geometry, and now that her husband will be able to ride with us more, she’ll need her own bike. :)

By the end, Sharon was just warmed up, and we were all worn out. It was a hard push on Chinn Chapel RD. It was a really good ride.
