2014-03-30 Sharon Argyle CC

Testing my back on the bike around Argyle and Copper Canyon. I was pretty slow, embarrassingly so. Also, IT WAS SO WINDY! Back is tired/sore, but I’m not dying. Will ice it soon.

First *real* ride with the Fenix 2. It spent about 5 minutes saving my bike ride. Then, when I plugged it in, the route was not detected nor synced by garmin, strava, mapmyride, or runkeeper. Even the garmin express auto-uploader didn’t find my ride.

It’s my 4th file on this device, but the only one of any appreciable length: 28 miles with a few stops, and a very long pause at the end.

I received this Fenix 2 about 2014-03-24. I just put my first ride on it today.

After the ride, I left it paused while I ate with friends.

I SAGged back, and got home. I noticed it was showing the clock screen.

I hit start, and it pulled up, asking if I wanted to resume, save, or cancel.

I hit save, and it spent between 3 and 5 minutes saving activity log, then saving activity.

After it was done, I plugged in, and express, connect, nor the garmin uploader browser plugin could see the workout.

Firmware is 2.50.

I did have some issues with the speed/cadence sensor early in the ride. I did notice that the Edge would eventually switch to GPS recording if I kept moving but speed sensor wasn’t received.

About 5 miles in on the ride, I repositioned all of my sensors, and the Edge was happy, pausing and unpausing as expected. The Fenix didn’t seem to do this. I’m wondering if it got stuck auto-paused the whole time? It did report several times that it had calculated my wheel diameter.

Also, for the very last leg of the ride, I had visited a bike shop. The magnet was striking the speed sensor arm and it was setting off cadence alarms as well for the Edge.
Other workouts on the Fenix today showed up, but they are just 1-2 minute test rides in front of my house. They were saved immediately after getting off the bike.

When I look in the Fenix2 history, it shows the workout is all zeros. From mass storage, there is a FIT file matching my longer workout. It’s 13k. My Edge workouts are 200-300k.

When trying to do a manual upload of the FIT file that should contain the workout, Garmin Connect just clocks. Manual upload to MapMyRide shows error 97720; Runkeeper just says it’s invalid. Strava recognizes it as a duplicate of my matching route from an Edge 500, but did not see it at all during the bulk import.

So the implication is that the file may contain some valid data, but is somehow corrupted by the device. Perhaps it decided to stay autopaused based on the sensor rather than GPS. I did change it to only use the cadence sensor when indoors very early in the ride due to the sensor issues. I did notice it buzz 1-2 seconds after any complete stop, assuming this was an auto-pause, but now I’m thinking maybe not.

I’m not sure, but it’s troubling and seriously impacts product acceptance. I like the device conceptually, especially because of the great number of sensors it supports. Ultimately though, it has to always record my workout with minimal heads-down time.

My expectation and hope is that the Fenix 2 will continue to record GPS accurately, no matter what an individual sensor might do. If I have a sensor battery fail, or alignment issue, I shouldn’t have to worry about the entire workout not being recorded. This is especially important since the beeper and buzzer in the Fenix 2 are very quiet/mild.

I sent this info to Garmin, along with a copy of the firmware and filesystem fromt he Fenix, and a copy of the filesystem from the Edge 500.

I had some other little thing to say about it, but it slipped my mind.

2013-12-04 Argyle Lunch Ride

Ride from Pilot Knoll park to Cachette, 144 Old Town Blvd, Argyle, TX by way of Hickory Hill Rd in Copper Canyon. Lunch, then ride back, and then I rode the rest of the way home. Co-conspirators were Phil, about on par with me, and Will, for his 4th ride out. Lunch was sandwiches, coffee, and lots of water. Lots of stops and pauses to keep the group together, get photos, gab, etc. Was a very fun ride.
